There is no national timetable for traffic departments. Every driving licence testing centre (DLTC), registering authority and municipal traffic office sets and publishes its own operating hours, and they change around public holidays, system upgrades and staffing. What matters most is not when the doors open but the latest time the office still accepts new applicants for your service.

What to check before visiting
- The office type: a testing centre, a vehicle registration office or a municipal traffic office.
- That it offers your service on the day you plan to go.
- The published opening and closing times, from the authority itself.
- The cut-off for new applicants, which is usually earlier than closing time.
- Any notice of closure, system downtime or relocation on the authority’s official channels.
Opening hours and closing times
Most municipal licensing offices open on weekday mornings and close in the mid-afternoon. Examples from official sources show how much they vary:
- Gauteng’s provincial Smart Licensing Centres: weekdays 08:00 to 17:00 and Saturdays 09:00 to 15:00 (Gauteng Roads and Transport, 6 March 2026).
- The RTMC’s Waterfall Park centre in Midrand: 07:00 to 21:00, Monday to Sunday, with booking required (same statement).
- City of Cape Town testing centres such as Milnerton: weekdays 08:00 to 15:30, Saturdays 08:00 to 12:30.
- City of Johannesburg’s Langlaagte centre: 07:30 to 15:00 on weekdays.
No national rule sets a cut-off for new applicants. In practice many offices stop issuing queue tickets an hour or more before closing. Ask the office directly.
Saturday, Sunday and public-holiday availability
Saturday opening is published office by office. KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Transport releases a monthly schedule naming which licensing offices open on which Saturdays and for how long (SAnews, 9 April 2026), so check the current month’s schedule before travelling to any KZN office on a weekend. Where offices do open on Saturday, the hours are shorter, they usually close by early afternoon, and tests are often not conducted.
- Sundays: closed, except for extended-hours sites such as Waterfall Park.

How to avoid a wasted trip
- Book where the service allows it; a booked slot is the most reliable way to be seen before cut-off.
- Arrive well before the office opens, especially for walk-in services.
- Avoid month-end and the days after a public holiday, which are the busiest.
- Confirm on the day that the system is up; downtime can stop all transactions regardless of the hours.
- Have every document and the completed form ready before you queue.
Offices without their own page
