Most driving licence testing centres (DLTCs) no longer serve test and licence card applicants who simply walk in. You book a slot first, usually on NaTIS Online, the national portal run by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), and in some provinces at the testing centre itself. This guide explains what can be booked, how booking differs between provinces, and what to do when there are no slots.

What can be booked online
When checked on 13 September 2026, the NaTIS Online home page offered bookings or applications for:
- Driving licence card renewal. See traffic department licence renewal.

- Professional driving permit (PrDP) applications. See PrDP.
- Vehicle licence disc renewal with delivery. See licence disc renewal.
- A “request a slot” option and reporting a damage-only crash.
Booking a slot does not complete the service. You still attend the testing centre for your eye test, fingerprints, photograph and the test itself.
When NaTIS or a DLTC booking is required
Booking rules are set by provinces and individual centres, so they are not the same everywhere:
- Gauteng: gov.za states that Gauteng residents must apply online for a learner’s licence, and Gauteng centres generally use NaTIS Online for tests and card renewals. Some centres set aside walk-in days for older applicants. Gauteng’s Smart Licensing Centres are covered in the Smart DLTC guide.
- City of Cape Town: learner’s and driving tests are booked in person at the testing centre, and the date is generated on eNaTIS. The City said in December 2025 that online booking was only available in a few provinces.
- Other provinces: many centres still book at the counter. Some accept NaTIS Online bookings. Check with the centre you plan to use.

How to make a booking
- Register a profile on NaTIS Online. You need your ID number, a cellphone number and an email address. See registering a NaTIS profile.
- Log in and choose the service, for example “renew your driving licence card” or a learner’s test.
- Choose the province and testing centre, then an available date and time.
- Pay where the service asks for payment online. For licence card renewals the RTMC has said the online amount is the card production fee, not an extra booking charge.
- Save or print the confirmation and take it with you.
Documents and details to prepare
- Your ID number, and the ID document or smart card itself for the visit.
- A working cellphone number and email address for the profile and confirmation.
- Proof of residential address for the visit. See proof of address.
- Your existing licence card, learner’s licence or PrDP where relevant.
- The application form for the service, if the centre asks you to complete it in advance. See traffic department application forms.
Fees and payment checks
Test, licence and card fees are set by provinces and municipalities and differ between centres, so this guide does not quote them. Check the amount shown on NaTIS Online before paying, and confirm any counter fees with the centre. Never pay a person or a website offering to secure a slot for you: bookings are made on the official portal or at the centre.
Changing or cancelling a booking
On NaTIS Online you cancel from your dashboard by selecting the booking and using the delete (trashcan) option. The portal warns that a cancellation cannot be undone, so book the new slot before cancelling the old one if you can.
Booking problems and no-slot situations

New slots are often released in batches, so checking again early in the morning and trying nearby centres both help.

Is booking on NaTIS Online free?
Registering and booking do not carry a separate booking fee. Where payment is taken online, it is the fee for the service itself, such as card production.

How far ahead can I book?
Slots are released by each centre and availability changes daily. If nothing shows, check again early in the morning and widen the search to nearby centres.
Do I need a booking to renew a licence disc?

What if I miss my booking?
You will normally have to book a new slot, and any non-refundable amount already paid may be lost. Cancel in advance if you cannot attend.
Someone offered to get me a slot for a fee. Is that legal?
Treat it as a scam. Bookings are made on the official portal or at the centre, and paying intermediaries risks losing money and your personal information.
Can I book for someone else?
The booking is linked to the applicant’s ID number and profile. The applicant must attend in person for eye tests, fingerprints and photographs.
