Vehicle licence renewal: disc renewal online and at the counter

Every vehicle on a public road needs a valid licence disc, and vehicle licence renewal is due every year. You can renew at a registering authority or, where your vehicle qualifies, through NaTIS licence renewal online, with the disc delivered to you. There is a short grace period after expiry, and penalties start once it ends.

Vehicle licensing or registration overview

Licensing is the annual renewal that keeps a registered vehicle legal. Registration is the one-off process of putting a vehicle in your name; see vehicle registration.

• The renewal notice is the MVL2. If it does not arrive, renew with form ALV instead. See no renewal notice.
• The Western Cape sends renewal notices by SMS or email rather than post.

A notice that never arrives is not a defence, so track the expiry date yourself.

Eligibility and documents

Vehicle licence renewal form

1. Check for outstanding fines or marks that could block the renewal.
2. Renew online if your vehicle qualifies, or take the notice and documents to a registering authority.
3. Pay the licence fee, plus any arrears or penalties.
4. Receive the disc at the counter or by delivery, and display it on the windscreen.

NaTIS online options

NaTIS license renewal has been available on NaTIS Online since February 2022. To renew online:

1. Log in to NaTIS Online. See NaTIS Online login.
2. Choose vehicle licence renewal and select the vehicle registered in your name.
3. Confirm the delivery address and pay by card.
4. The RTMC says the disc is usually delivered within three to five working days.

NaTIS vehicle license renewal online is not offered in every province, and according to the NaTIS FAQs a disc will not be issued online if you have unpaid licences on another vehicle, an AARTO enforcement order, a vehicle that needs a roadworthy certificate, or an administrative or police mark. Fees and payment checks

Roadworthy requirements where applicable
