Hillstar Traffic Department Learner’S Licence

To apply for a learner’s licence at the Hillstar Traffic Department, you must visit your nearest traffic department and bring the following:

  • Official South African identity document (ID)
  • Two ID-sized colour or black and white photographs (35mm x 45mm)
  • Proof of address (not older than 3 months; affidavit required if under 18 or if the bill is not in your name)
  • A completed LL1 application form, which you can obtain at the traffic department
  • Application fee (approximately R68) and a black pen for form completion

Applicants must be at least 16 years old (for motorcycles up to 125cc), 17 years old (for cars, minibuses, or light goods vehicles under 3,500 kg), or 18 years old (for heavy vehicles over 3,500kg)[2][3].

You must book your learner’s licence test date at the department. The test covers road rules, signs, and vehicle controls, and you need to pass specific minimums to qualify[1]. On the test day, bring your booking receipt and your ID. An eye test is required and will be conducted at the centre or via a certified optometrist[2][4].

If you pass, pay the R33 issuing fee to receive your learner’s licence. The learner’s licence is valid for 24 months and cannot be extended[2][3]. You may only drive the appropriate vehicle category under supervision by a licensed driver (except motorcycles)[3].

To prepare, study the official K53 manual, available at libraries or bookstores, and utilize online practice tests[3].

For inquiries and to book, contact the Hillstar Traffic Department directly at 021 799 7323[4].
